On this page you will see many images taken from a close angle. The photographs will consist of many objects but the aim of the photograph will be to focus on all the different and detailed edges of the object.
Edges
In this this lesson I decided to take 30 photographs at an unusual angle of an object with an edge. Before I went out to take all the photos I wrote down around 30 names of items which had an edge. My examples included objects like a mirror, necklace, fence, clothing, leaves, tree bark etc. I did not find this assignment very challenging as after I had taken five or so images I realised that every item has an edge, it just depends on the angle you look at it. Therefore I took 45 photographs overall because I felt I wanted to challenge myself a little more.
My favourite 'edges' photographs
These 6 images are my favourite photographs out of the 45 above, all for different reasons. The first photo is one of my most liked because I think the out of focus background makes for an interesting contrast with the detailed pages in the foreground of the photograph. The second image, if not the most liked photograph, is an engaging image due to the angle it was taken. The third photograph I took was meant to have the main subject be the stone bench but what really caught my attention was the dirty camera lens. You can see small dust particles on the left side of the image because of the direction the sunlight is coming from. I selected the forth photograph as one of my favourites because of how the camera managed to pick up all of the tiny creases in the paper mache which I found impressive. The fifth photo is also a favourite of min due to the complex detail the camera managed to pick up. Now finally, I admire the sixth photograph I took on 'edges' because of how I tilted my camera a little to the right and also because of the small pieces of dust around the bottom of the pole.

Dolores Marat
I have chosen this image from Dolores Marat out of all the others due to the great amount of questions it raises. For example, Where was the photograph taken? Is that a man on the ground? Why is he there? Is he dead? How did he die? What happened after the image was taken? and etc. This photograph makes people asks questions as the picture gives you a rare and unknown event (dead man lying on the ground) with very little information. Which creates a very mysterious era. The colours in the photograph are all very bleached shades due to the mould and age of the walls. Composition of everything (e.g. stairs and walls) are very thoughtfully placed inside the frame.

Inspired Work
This images were all inspired by Dolores Marat's blurry photographs (I did not choose any of those photographs). All of these 49 photographs were taken on one of schools cameras while I shook it. This caused my photographs to be very blurred which is what I was aiming for them to be.
Dolores Marat pt.2
I chose to edit these 6 images out of the 28 below because I found they looked the most mysterious. I found they looked the most mysterious because if I wasn't the photographer they would raise multiple questions in my mind. I used iPhoto to play with the contrast, exposure, saturation, etc. I afterwards also added a few subtle filters like sepia.
Edges at Home
Sophie Tajan
Sophie Tajan's photography includes a lot of pastel colours and odd angles of decorative items. Sophie puts a lot of attention into the composition of the fruits and glasses, which are uniquely placed in different areas of the frame. I think the range of colours used give off a very springtime vibe and the bright colours contrast with the white background very well. The most recurring colours and shades include a soft yellow, a clean white, a pastel pink, a baby blue and a gentle green.

20 themed edges
I decided to take 20 photographs of themed edges. I chose the theme of my kitchen as I found there were a lot of interesting edges to find there. I found the this quite challenging at first as I wasn't sure which items to take images of, but after taking around five pictures I started to get the hang of it a little more. I enjoyed using the technique of using depth of field to make my photographs more intriguing.

Alma Haser
Almar Haser is my inspiration for my final piece because I find her work one of the most unique types of photograph I've ever come across. It is unique in a way that it manages to keep you looking at her work no matter how many times you've seen it before. I really admire photographs that are capable of attracting someones attention and keep it.
I plan to make my final piece for edges similar to Alma's picture of a man with his face distorted. I will do this by taking multiple portrait photographs of students in this school and then give the 2D image edges by printing the photograph out twice and scrunching up the duplicate. |
Final piece : Edges
These are my 6 creations for my edges final piece inspired by Alma Haser. I took one of Alma's photographs and tried to recreate it. I attempted to do this for a few of my images by selecting parts of the subject's face and scrunching that part up. In the other images I decided to get a little more creative and find another way to give this 2D portrait a 3D surface. I came up with the idea that instead of crunching the picture up I should instead fold the photograph to create a different surface. I found this project very challenging as I couldn't think of that many different ways to make the portrait stand out. I ran out of ideas on the last image I did, (6th image in the bottom row of photographs) I had an idea to instead give the portrait edges I could highlight and repeat the main edge (eyes) This did not turn out the way I wanted it to turn out, I find that it looks more like a normal collage based on people's eyes intend of an edges final piece. An image which I do think turned out well is the 2nd image (in the bottom row of photographs) because I can clearly see the purpose of that artwork was to give the portrait a bumpy surface. I also really like this photograph because the scrunched up part of my creation lines up with the original photograph which the others do not do as well as this one does. Overall I find that this final piece went exceptionally well because all of my photographs are on topic but I think I should of done at least 2 more portraits. If I would have made more pieces I would of taken some photographs of someones side profile to give more variation to my images.
